Dal Richards Orchestra

Back by popular demand Canada 's own " King of Swing ", the inimitable
Dal Richards and his seven piece orchestra are returning for another night
to remember at magical Olsen's Farm. Dal and the band play a great library
of music from the golden era of the big bands. From the sweet sounds of
Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller to the pulsing rhythms of Count Basie and
Artie Shaw to the newer sounds of bossa nova, Nuevo swing and good old
rock and roll - this concert is sure to bring back old memories and create
some new ones.
Come and delight your senses further by partaking in our Wild
Salmon Barbeque Feast before the Dal Richards concert. The
Salmon Barbeque is available to Dal Richards' ticket holders only. Dinner

Steve Dawson – Guitar Workshop

Come to learn from the master. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain
insight into the playing of guitarist-extraordinaire and member of the
JUNO award-winning band Zubot & Dawson. Steve's playing and knowledge
encapsulates a broad range of musical traditions and styles. Don't miss
this opportunity to be inspired. This is a demonstration/performance. You
do not need to bring an instrument.

Sharon Minemoto Quintet
Saturday July 30 Olsen’s Farm 8:00 PM
The Sharon Minemoto Quintet
is one of the most dynamic and well-knit, live jazz groups on the Canadian
jazz scene. Playing in the post-bop tradition, and influenced by Art
Blakey, Wayne Shorter, Brad Mehldau and Stevie Wonder, Sharon's original
music is diverse and refreshing, a great showcase for her considered and
highly melodic piano style. The quintet, with members Ross Taggart, tenor
saxophone; Brad Turner , trumpet; Darren Radtke, bass; and Bernie Arai
on drums, was featured in the recent Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
What a delight to have the Sharon Minemoto Quintet perform here on Hornby
Island !

We Are One

Nancy Adams, Eilat Tovi & Jessica Nygren Dance Collaboration featuring Hornby
Island Dancers
"We Are One" is a collaborative creative dance project directed by Hornby
Island resident choreographer, Nancy Adams, with guest choreographers Eilat
Tovi from Bali , Indonesia , and Jessica Nygren from Courtenay. This piece
features dancers from Hornby Island . This special composition explores and
expresses the human experience: we are all unique individuals yet we are the
same, we all come together cooperatively, yet we have our own path, and each
individual's contribution is essential to the collective. Set in the trees
at the picturesque Olsen's Farm, this promises to be a dramatic, powerful and
meaningful performance.

Jim Byrnes Acoustic Band Featuring Zubot & Dawson

A local legend in both music and television, blues guitarist/vocalist
Jim Byrnes is one of Canada 's most respected and beloved musicians.
Last year, Jim celebrated the release of a new CD and a brand new musical
direction. Jim will be collaborating with an incredible lineup including
well-known JUNO award-winning strang-sters Steve Dawson on guitar and Jesse
Zubot on violin, as well as percussionist Eliot Polsky and bassist Keith
Lowe.

Swamperella

Swamperella is a 5 piece
acoustic band whose musical expression is deeply rooted in the Cajun
tradition. The band's original material attests to a profound understanding
of and connection to the ' Louisiana sound.' This is reflected in
its old time waltzes, "swamp stompin'" two-steps,
and English and Cajun French songs. Swamperella is not just a musical
group, it's a scene. Spicy, melancholy, toe tapping, sexy, the
Swamperella experience ''defies listeners to stay seated''. Consisting
of lead fiddler, vocalist and washboard player Soozi Schlanger, button
accordion-player, fiddler and vocalist Peter Jellard, guitarist Conny
Nowe, bassist Rachel Melas and percussionist Dave Pontello, Swamperalla is like
Mardi Gras on tour!

Mortal Coil
Mortal Coil is dedicated to creating original,
imaginative, theatre and spectacle for audiences of all ages. The company
brings a sense of magic and myth to their performing characters through
the use of stilts, dance, puppetry, voice and percussion, masks and fantastic
costuming. Their performances are stunning and highly visual. " Watching

Jordan Hansen
Come and drum! All ages welcome. P ercussionist-extraordinaire
, Jordan Hanson, of Hand Drum Rhythms, will guide drumming participants
and observers through a drum workshop/performance. Specializing in percussion
instruments from around the world, Jordan Hanson will take the audience
and workshop participants on a rhythmic tour full of vibrant energy - Africa
, Cuba , Brazil , Thailand and Indonesia . Instruments include conga, bongos,
djembe, balaphone, kalimba, shakers, bells, pandeiro and cajon. Jordan
will provide percussion instruments to all who want to join in - children
and adults alike.

Amanda Hale will read from the soon to be published The Reddening Path.
This is the story of Paméla, a young Guatemalan woman who was adopted
as an infant by a Toronto lesbian couple. 21 year old Paméla's
return to Guatemala on a quest to find her birth mother turns into
a multi-layered journey which uncovers a tangle of political and romantic
intrigue. The book explores the spiritual and emotional complexities facing
those of mixed blood, searching back to the first imprinting of European
culture and Catholicism on the indigenous life of Meso-America. Amanda
has been writing for over 30 years. She is a published novelist and poet,
has written for theatre and worked as a journalist. Amanda's previous
work has been voted among the top ten novels of 2001 by Toronto 's
Now Magazine.
George Szanto will read from the final volume of The
Conquests of Mexico trilogy, The
Condesa of M. George Szanto's work includes Not Working (1982), Sixteen
Ways to Skin a Cat (1978), Duets (1989), and Friends & Marriages (1995). During
the last few years George Szanto has given a large part of his writing time
over to a trilogy of novels, collectively called The Conquests of Mexico . The
Underside of Stones (1990; reprint 2004), part one of the trilogy,
is the story of a Canadian who lives a year in Mexico and finds his life
and beliefs progressively subverted and reconstituted; part two, Second
Sight (2004), exposes the realms of Mexican wealth and politics;
part three, The Condesa of M. (2001; reprint 2005), explores Mexico
's darker religious underworld. George is the recipient of several awards
for his writing including a National Magazine Award and the Hugh MacLennan
Prize for Fiction.

Sarah Chase - accompanied by Bill Brennan

Toronto and Hornby-based dancer and choreographer Sarah Chase is an exceptionally
gifted soloist, and her work has been very warmly received across North
America and Europe . Sarah will grace the Hornby Community Hall stage
this year with a spellbinding performance. Sarah studied dance with such
teachers as Peggy Baker, Patricia Miner and Linda Rabin, and at the Teacher's
Collective in Toronto , the Cunningham School in New York and the Toronto
Dance Theatre. Today, she sees herself as a storyteller as well as dancer.
She speaks as she dances, and the spoken word is almost as important as
movement as she spins her tales, in an intimate spirit of confidences shared.
Sarah's dances have been presented at international festivals in Belgium
, Holland , Austria , Norway , Germany and Canada.

Anne Glover

Bring the family out for a charming and funny afternoon of storytelling.
Anne Glover has been enchanting audiences for years with her stories
and string games. She has the uncanny ability to create characters
out of thin air. Some of her stories are old folktales, some come from
events of her childhood, and others are woven on the spot. Anne has
appeared at countless schools, festivals, and conferences across the continent.
She has also performed her original stories on CBC radio. Anne is a
warm and energetic entertainer with a humourous wisdom and an infectious
enthusiasm for life.

Christopher Gaze & Michael Sims

"An evening of words and music, of fun and frivolity. Actor Christopher
Gaze and pianist Mike Sims come to Hornby with an evening of eclectic delight.
Songs both new and familiar, stories and anecdotes, Shakespearean snippets
and Flanders and Swan. Come one come all - let us entertain you!"
Back by popular demand, Christopher Gaze , best known as Artistic Director
and founder of Vancouver 's Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival, is
returning to the Hornby Festival this year for another wonderful theatre
performance. During his professional acting career, spanning more than
three decades, Christopher has performed in virtually every major centre
across Canada , as well as in England and the USA . Recent theatre credits
include the role of Frank Strang in Equus at The Vancouver Playhouse for
which he received the Jessie Theatre Award for best supporting actor. In
May, he was honoured by the Governor General with Canada 's Meritorious
Service Medal.

Bartholdy Trio
Saturday August 6 Community Hall 8:00 PM
Three wonderful musicians come together in the Bartholdy Trio. Bruce Vogt
is a unique and dynamic performer. Bruce performs regularly in Canada and
has also inspired audiences in England , the USA , Germany , France , Italy
, Norway , the former Czechoslovakia , Bulgaria , and Japan . Bruce Vogt
's repertoire is immensely varied, and encompasses music from the sixteenth
century up to the present. He has consistently championed the music of
contemporary composers, and has commissioned and premiered a number of
new works. Lanny Pollet teaches flute and orchestration at the School of
Music , University of Victoria and performs regularly in chamber music
and, also, in orchestra and as soloist. He is featured, with pianist, Bruce
Vogt , on the CD Poetic License (music by Handel, Mozart, Brahms and Debussy).
Mr. Pollet has published transcriptions of music for woodwinds (such as
Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture for woodwind quintet) and composes (Poems
of Reminisicense by Thomas Hardy for SATB choir and piano). Other interests
include early music performance. Originally from California , Pamela Highbaugh
Aloni received her music degrees from Indiana University and California
State University , Northridge in Los Angeles . While performing occasionally
as soloist with Orchestra and playing various recital program, Ms. Highbaugh
Aloni has primarily found her career in Chamber Music. As a founding member
of the Lafayette String Quartet, Pamela has performed extensively throughout
North America and Europe .

Jennifer Scott Quartet

Vancouver-based vocalist/pianist Jennifer Scott is a rare
find. Possessed of a very pure and flexible voice that seems made for jazz
singing, Jennifer's solid, swinging piano chops are icing on the cake.
She has a passion for rare standards and a gift for interpreting Brazilian
music. Jennifer will be joined at the Hornby Festival by Renee Worst,
Tom Keenlyside - saxophone and flute, John Nolan - drums.

HORNBY ARTISTS
Monday August 8 Community Hall 8:00 PM
Hornby Artists, co-ordinated by Tony Wilson (yes, the Vancouver Jazz
Festival!) and Dana Inglis is a collaboration of a mere fifteen of Hornby
Island's most talented resident musicians, including Melissa Devost,
Nick McGowan, and Arlene Mason. Three sets of stylistically different
music will be presented with a range from roots, rhythm and blues, country
and jazz, and everything in between. Whether it's the tenor sax, guitar,
drums, bass, piano, mandolin or trumpet with some incredible vocals thrown
in and intricate arrangements, this will be sure to please. It is a rarity
to get this calibre of so many brilliant and dynamic talents all together
in one evening. This evening will be opened by a performance of two of
Hornby Island 's rising stars, Bryn Nightingale - Bohn and Autumn Candlish-Rutherford
on fiddle and vocals. Brin and Autumn are currently in the Family Band
and Marimba group where they express their natural talents for music.
The girls will be performing with Hornby's own Dana Inglis. Hornby Artists
is a concert not to be missed!
