Art Show at Hornby Hall

Thursday, July 30 to Saturday, August 9
Hornby Hall - free event

Once again the Festival showcases Hornby Visual Artists with a show at the Hornby Hall for the duration of the Festival. This year our walls will be graced with work from Roberta Pyx Sutherland and Linda Frimer.

Linda Frimer

Linda Frimer is an acclaimed artist and well known community facilitator who has been intimately involved in world, Jewish, and Canadian national, cultural artistic pursuits. She creates commemorative, educational, cultural, and esthetically moving artistic works. Born in the wilderness interior of British Columbia, the forest first inspired Linda's deep belief in the s anctity of all forms of life, while stories of her ancestors' journey strengthened her faith in the human spirit and her deep commitment to helping others. She gives generously of herself in the causes of community and in defense of environment issues. Her paintings for the Western Wilderness Committee have raised invaluable funds for wilderness preservation, but more importantly reached a chord of emotional response where real change occurs. Most recently, she has created a commemorative print for the Raincoast Conservation Society, expressing the interdependence of wildlife and wilderness. Her awards include Woman of Distinction Nomination Award, YWCA arts and culture category, Woman of Valor N'Shee Chabad, Woman of Honour-Israeli Bonds and Service Award - Canadian Red Cross.

Roberta Pyx Sutherland

Internationally acclaimed artist Roberta "Pyx" Sutherland was born and raised on the West Coast. She attended Emily Carr with a BFA from the University of Victoria and she trained in printmaking in the U.K. with a painting residency at the Banff Centre. Her work has been collected by The Canada Council for the Arts and several public galleries. Pyx's current work engages the global perspective and broad view of landscape inspired by satellite imagery. She examines the tradition of map-making as a way to commodify and abstract nature. Cartography affects the use of pattern, colour and methods of division in her work. The divided segments, borders and boundaries are often bands of gold leaf, encapsulating lakes and rivers (symbolizing water as a precious, contentious commodity.) All of the work combines layers of recycled materials into deeply textured collages. Her inspiration is the grandeur of landform and its perpetual evolution in contrast to the contemporary dilemma of sustainability versus exploitation.
